Last night the Bloomsbury Ballroom at Victoria House in Bloomsbury Square came alive with the infectious energy of The London Cabaret Club's latest production, 'Copacabana.' Artistic Director and choreographer Doni Fierro, in collaboration with London Cabaret CEO Evelina Girling, have crafted a brand-new show that transports the audience to the sun-kissed shores of Brazil. A pre-show drink, a couple of well delivered songs and then what seems like a Brazilian ‘flash mob’ herald what is to come.
Divided into three captivating acts, 'Copacabana' immersed the spectators in a mesmerizing journey through the essence of the famed beachfront paradise. Now on our table for two in the main ballroom, Act one unfolded amidst the vibrant revelry of Rio de Janeiro, as samba dancers adorned in dazzling exotic costumes enveloped the venue with the pulsating rhythms and exhilarating vibes of carnival season. The heart of the capital momentarily transformed into a tropical oasis. It’s an immersive show with dancers in the isles as well as the central stage providing a dazzlingly intimate experience.
Act two delved into an entirely different incarnation of 'Copacabana,' transporting us to the world-renowned New York City nightclub that bears the same name. Infamous for hosting a star-studded clientele, the resident crooners deliver classics in the style of Dean Martin as the large dancing troupe execute perfect Samba routines.
The grand finale, act three, is inspired by 'Lola The Showgirl,' a bewitching Latin dancer forever immortalized in the iconic theme song of Barry Manilow's 'Copacabana.' Slick routines, seamless moves, and fluid movement entwine to deliver an intoxicating spectacle with an aerial acrobatic duo showcasing their agility and strength.
The music selection throughout the performance was a diverse medley that traversed various genres with timeless Brazilian classics ingeniously transformed into worldwide hits by 'The Brazilian Bombshell' Carmen Miranda. The Girl from Ipanema becomes The Girl from Copacabana and, of course, no Copacabana production would be complete without the iconic song that made Barry Manilow a household name.
The dancers, decorated in vibrant feather costumes, gracefully cha-cha and merengue throughout the venue to ensure wherever you are seated the action comes to you. To enhance the immersive experience further, the menu is Brazilian themed, tantalizing the taste buds and transporting the guests even deeper into the world of Copacabana. For those unwilling to let the magic fade, post-show DJ sets allowed the celebrations to continue.
Copacabana is a breath-taking summer celebration with dazzling choreography, captivating music, and exuberant spirit. This production succeeds in transporting you back to Copacabana, you will leave with a smile on your face and skip in your step.
