Shakespeare’s Globe is delighted to announce full casting for Milton’s Comus – A Masque in Honour of Chastity, directed by Lucy Bailey. The first production in Emma Rice’s inaugural winter season in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Milton’s epic masque tells of an unnamed heroine lost in the woods who encounters Comus, God of Revelry.
Director Lucy Bailey returns to the Globe after memorable and acclaimed productions of Titus Andronicus (2006 and 2014), Timon of Athens (2008) and Macbeth (2010). Working on the masque in collaboration with Lucy is award-winning writer Patrick Barlow. Patrick’s four-person 39 Steps played in the West End for eight years and in over forty countries world-wide, winning Olivier, Tony, Helpmann and Molière Awards. Other recent theatre includes Ben-Hur (Tricycle Theatre) and a new version of A Christmas Carol (Noel Coward Theatre).
The role of Comus, God of Revelry, will be played by Danny Lee Wynter. Danny’s previous work for Shakespeare’s Globe includes King Lear, Henry IV Parts I & II, The Frontline and Bedlam. Other recent theatre includes Deathwatch (The Print Room), The Glass Menagerie (Nuffield Theatre), Much Ado About Nothing (Old Vic) and The Miser (Manchester Royal Exchange). Screen credits include Joe’s Place and Capturing Mary (BBC/HBO).
Emma Curtis will play The Lady. Emma’s recent theatre includes A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Liverpool Everyman). Her screen credits include The Hippopotamus (Electric Shadow), Cider with Rosie (BBC) and the upcoming Netflix original drama The Crown.
Rob Callender and Theo Cowan will play The Lady’s brothers. Rob Callender, The Elder Brother, recently starred in Another Country (Trafalgar Studios). His screen credits include Sherlock (BBC), Game of Thrones (HBO) and Endeavour (ITV). Theo Cowan will play The Younger Brother. His recent theatre includes The Absence of War (Headlong), It’s Like the 60s Never Happened and Prime Time (Royal Court) and Lord of the Flies (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre). Television includes The Outcast (BBC), Doctors (BBC) and Home Fires (ITV).
The Earl of Bridgewater will be played by Andrew Bridgmont. Andrew’s extensive stage credits include The Caucasian Chalk Circle (Lyceum, Edinburgh), Democracy (Old Vic) and War Horse (National Theatre), and for Shakespeare’s Globe, The Maid’s Tragedy and The Winter’s Tale. Screen credits include Kingsmen: Secret Service (Marv Films), Houdini and Doyle (ITV) and Penny Dreadful (Showtime).
Philip Cumbus takes the role of Attendant Spirit. Philip has appeared in numerous Shakespeare’s Globe productions, including The Inn at Lydda, ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore, Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, The Globe Mysteries and Love’s Labour’s Lost. Other recent theatre includes The Importance of Being Earnest (West End and UK Tour), First Light (Chichester Festival Theatre) and Vincent in Brixton (UK Tour).
The Monstrous Routs will be played by Paul Bullion, Suzie Chard, Phil Snowden and Natasha Magigi. Paul Bullion’s recent theatre includes Everyman (National Theatre) and Spamalot! (West End and UK Tour). His screen credits include SS-GB (BBC), The Bastard Executioner (Netflix/FX) and Peaky Blinders (BBC). Suzie Chard’s recent theatre includes Stepping Out (UK Tour), No Sex Please, We’re British! (UK Tour) and Oliver! (UK Tour).
Natasha Magigi plays a Monstrous Rout and Sabrina. Her previous work for Shakespeare’s Globe includes Twelfth Night and Much Ado About Nothing. Other theatre includes A Streetcar Named Desire (Leicester Curve), Redefining Juliet (Barbican) and To Kill a Mockingbird (Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre). Phil Snowden plays another Monstrous Rout. His recent theatre includes Kes (Sheffield Crucible), The Winter’s Tale (RSC), Jesus Christ Superstar (UK Tour) and Billy Elliot (Victoria Palace).
