English National Opera has released the first production images for its brand-new staging of Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride, opening tonight at the London Coliseum for a strictly limited run through to 14 November 2026.
Photographed by Helen Murray, the newly released visuals capture the intensity of Gluck’s masterpiece as it receives its ENO premiere. Widely celebrated as the composer’s crowning achievement, the opera centers on Iphigénie, who was secretly rescued from sacrifice by the goddess Diana and now serves as her priestess. Her tragic existence is upended when her tormented brother Oreste arrives, setting off a gripping drama of persecution, sibling reconciliation, and divine mercy.
This striking new production is helmed by Olivier Award-winning director Lyndsey Turner, returning to ENO following her acclaimed 2019 production of Noye’s Fludde. Baroque specialist David Bates makes his ENO debut conducting the award-winning Orchestra of ENO, bringing his renowned theatrical flair to Gluck’s French libretto by Nicolas-François Guillard.
Mezzo-soprano Christine Rice MBE leads the cast as Iphigénie, following her triumphant turn in ENO’s Dead Man Walking. Baritone Jacques Imbrailo joins her as Oreste, alongside tenor Nick Pritchard as Pylade and baritone Morgan Pearse as Thoas. The cast also features Harewood Artist Amy Holyland as Second Priestess, soprano Olivia Rose Tringham as First Priestess, Sarah Gilford as A Greek Woman, and bass Robert Winslade Anderson as Scythian Priest, performing alongside the Chorus of ENO.
The production features set and costume design by Soutra Gilmour, with lighting design by Tim Mitchell. Performed in its original French with English surtitles, the show runs for just four performances on 6, 9, 11, and 14 November.
Tickets start at £15, with free admission for under-21s and discounts available for ages 21–35.
