Sonia Friedman Productions, STUDIOCANAL, Eliza Lumley Productions, and Suzanne Jones have announced that the record-breaking, seven-time Olivier Award-winning sensation Paddington The Musical will officially open in Sydney at the Capitol Theatre in September 2027.

Based on Michael Bond’s beloved books and the award-winning STUDIOCANAL feature films, the production features music and lyrics by Tom Fletcher, a book by Jessica Swale, and direction by Luke Sheppard. Sydney will be only the third theatre district in the world to host the show, following its premiere at London’s Savoy Theatre and its upcoming Broadway launch at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in April 2027.

The London production achieved history by tying the record for the most wins for any musical in Olivier Award history, securing Best New Musical, Best Director, Best Set Design, and Best Costume Design for Tahra Zafar and Gabriella Slade, who crafted the iconic bear. The original cast recording on Decca Records has also broken records, becoming the fastest-selling physical West End cast album of the 21st century in the UK.

Producers Sonia Friedman and Eliza Lumley expressed their excitement about bringing the show to Australia, noting that Paddington’s story of finding a home through kindness, acceptance, and belonging feels particularly resonant for Australian audiences. Australian Producer Suzanne Jones added that the production combines grand scale with deep character, humour, and heart. Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper praised the announcement as a major triumph for Sydney, highlighting its role in supporting the local visitor economy. Composer Tom Fletcher also shared his joy, describing the process of writing the score as the greatest adventure of his career and expressing enthusiasm for sharing the show with Australian theatregoers.

Following a small bear who travels from Peru to London before being taken in by the Brown family, Paddington The Musical follows the family as they embark on a rescue mission when a vengeful villain targets their new companion. Casting for the Sydney production will be confirmed at a later date.
