Universal Pictures Content Group, LW Entertainment, and Cameron Mackintosh have announced that Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic The Phantom of the Opera will be filmed live at its original West End home, His Majesty’s Theatre. The landmark live capture will be recorded in front of a live audience and released internationally in cinemas in 2027.
Directed for the screen by Brett Sullivan (Hadestown) and produced by Dione Orrom (Six: The Musical Live!), the project forms a core part of the musical's 40th anniversary celebrations. The filming will capture the special milestone Gala performance, complete with a celebratory curtain call featuring distinguished alumni from across the show's four-decade history joining the current company.
The international anniversary company for the birthday season is led by Jordan Donica as The Phantom, Beatrice Penny-Touré as Christine Daaé, and Rhys Whitfield as Raoul. The principal cast also features Sierra Boggess as Carlotta, Matt Bateman as Piangi, Joseph Millson as Monsieur André, Ian Pirie as Monsieur Firmin, Joanna Riding as Madame Giry, and Millie Lyon as Meg, backed by a full West End ensemble performing through November 2026.
To further celebrate forty years of the legendary show, Andrew Lloyd Webber has gone back to the original 1986 analogue master tapes to create The Phantom of the Opera (The Andrew Lloyd Webber 2026 Mix). Remixed for the first time to restore previously unreleased sections and archive material, the newly restored recording lands on digital platforms today, with physical CD and vinyl editions following on 6 November.
Set in the depths of the Paris Opera House, Gaston Leroux's haunting tale of passion, obsession, and music has enticed over 160 million audience members globally since its 1986 premiere. Directed on stage by Seth Sklar-Heyn based on Harold Prince’s original staging, this revitalization of Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular production continues to break box office records worldwide. Tickets for the historic West End run at His Majesty’s Theatre are currently on sale through October 2027.
