To celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Phantom of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber has remixed and remastered the landmark 1986 Original London Cast Recording. Rediscovering the original analogue master tapes at Abbey Road Studios, Lloyd Webber has created The Phantom of the Opera (The Andrew Lloyd Webber 2026 Mix), featuring vocal and orchestral performances presented without modern enhancements.
The project marks the first time the score has been remixed since its original recording. Out of eleven two-inch analogue tapes recorded in 1986, eight survived intact and were remixed directly. The material from three missing tape reels was restored using an unplayed 1986 vinyl pressing. The updated mix captures the original West End cast performances of Michael Crawford, Sarah Brightman, and the late Steve Barton, conducted by Mike Reed.
Expanded across three vinyl LPs rather than two, the 2026 mix restores score passages that were originally cut due to runtime constraints on standard vinyl. The release also includes three previously unheard archive demos: an early cassette draft of the title track, an unreleased early manager's scene titled 'Box Five', and an initial demo of 'Masquerade' featuring original lyrics by Richard Stilgoe.
The rollout begins on Friday 18 September 2026 with the digital release of the title single, 'The Phantom of the Opera', sung by Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford. The full digital album follows on 9 October 2026, coinciding with the production’s official 40th anniversary and a gala celebration at His Majesty’s Theatre in London.
Physical editions will follow, with a 3LP vinyl and 2CD release scheduled for 6 November 2026. A definitive 6LP Collector’s Box Set, titled A Collector’s Piece Indeed, will launch on 20 November 2026. The box set incorporates the 2026 Mix alongside the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, the Masquerade: The Orchestral Score vinyl, an art print, replica annotated scripts, and archival memorabilia.
