Theatr Clwyd has announced its Spring 2027 season, presenting three productions centered around themes of escape, reinvention, and the fight for freedom. Spanning a Victorian drawing room, a modern high-rise garden, and a North Wales farm, the North Wales producing theatre’s upcoming lineup explores what it takes to break free when trapped by circumstances.
The season opens with Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House (27 March – 17 Apr 2027). Adapted by Simon Stephens from Charlotte Barslund's translation, the production is directed by Dena Davis, a graduate of Theatr Clwyd's emerging director programme. The gripping drama explores a marriage built on secret debts and unraveling truths, questioning the true cost of personal independence.
Following this is Linda Marshall Griffiths’ The Secret Garden (19 May – 5 June 2027), a contemporary reimagining of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic novel. Co-produced with Leeds Playhouse and directed by Amy Leach, the production places the forgotten garden atop a concrete high-rise, following four teenagers navigating a chaotic world. Designed for broad accessibility, every performance will feature integrated creative captioning and creative audio description.
Rounding out the spring season is the world premiere of The Last Train For Hope (22 May – 12 June 2027), a dark thriller by Welsh playwright Lucie Lovatt (Kill Thy Neighbour). Directed by Theatr Clwyd Artistic Director Kate Wasserberg, the story is set on a struggling Flintshire farm where a strained marriage is pushed to the limit by the sudden arrival of a free-spirited sister, leading to uncovered secrets and mounting tension under the backdrop of a total solar eclipse.
Artistic Director Kate Wasserberg highlighted that while the three plays inhabit vastly different settings, each asks the fundamental question of how individuals find the strength to break free. Looking ahead, Theatr Clwyd also confirmed its Autumn 2027 programming will feature a co-production with the Sherman Theatre, staging the world premiere of Daf James’ award-winning Princess of Wales.
