Golden Globe-winning actress Teri Hatcher appeared on Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden to discuss making her West End debut as Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada Musical.
Hatcher is taking over the iconic runway-mag boss role from her longtime close friend Vanessa Williams. Speaking on air, Hatcher revealed that her initial call upon being approached for the stage adaptation was directly to Williams, with whom she has shared a friendship since the 1990s.
"Vanessa and I have been friends since the 90s," Hatcher shared. "My first call was to her, and she said, 'I've been talking to them about you for a year, you should do it, you'll have so much fun!' She’s just been so incredibly generous and supportive."
Addressing the show's high-fashion wardrobe, Hatcher explained that while the award-winning costume designs will be tailored specifically to her frame, she is eager to bring her own interpretation to the character's aesthetic on stage.
The appearance marks a major milestone for the American actress, who described performing in London’s West End as a long-held ambition. "It’s a huge bucket list item," Hatcher noted. "It’s the right role, I’m the right age, and it’s the right time in my life personally, so I’m over the moon."
Reflecting on her earlier stage career, Hatcher also recounted starring in Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall’s national tour of Cabaret in the late 1990s as Sally Bowles alongside Norbert Leo Butz. While offered the chance to transfer to Broadway at the conclusion of the tour, Hatcher declined due to the physical demands of touring while raising her young daughter.
"I was exhausted," Hatcher admitted during the interview. "I don’t really believe in regret, but that is the one thing where I go, 'wow, maybe I should’ve done that.'"
