Double Olivier Award-winning musical theatre star Michael Ball OBE is set to star as Willy Wonka in a brand-new production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The musical adaptation of Roald Dahl's beloved story will open at the London Coliseum for a strictly limited summer season, running from 4 June 2027 until 18 September 2027.
Originating at Curve, Leicester, this fresh staging will be directed by Curve Artistic Director Nikolai Foster. The show seamlessly combines the iconic songs 'Pure Imagination', 'The Candy Man', and 'I've Got a Golden Ticket'—written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the classic 1971 film—with the acclaimed original score by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and a book by David Greig.
Michael Ball brings over four decades of celebrated stage, recording, and broadcasting success to the iconic role of the eccentric chocolatier. His extensive West End credits include award-winning performances as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray and the title role in Sweeney Todd, alongside leading roles in Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Audiences will follow young Charlie Bucket as he discovers a golden ticket, unlocking an extraordinary world of pure imagination inside Wonka's mysterious factory alongside Grandpa Joe and a colorful cast of characters. The production features choreography by Ebony Molina, set design by Leslie Travers, costume design by Katrina Lindsey, and illusion design by Chris Fisher.
Produced by ROYO, Fiery Angel, Gavin Kalin Productions, and Curve, the production will host its official national press night on Sunday 20 June 2027. Tickets go on general sale on Tuesday 29 September, starting from £20, with priority access available via the official show website.
