A star-studded cast will assemble at London’s Lyric Theatre on Monday, 7 December 2026, for a one-off staged reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol in aid of national homelessness charity Crisis.
Directed by Bessie Carter, the special production features an ensemble cast from stage and screen, including Imelda Staunton, Bella Ramsey, Matthew Macfadyen, Emma Corrin, Jim Broadbent, Paapa Essiedu, Adjoa Andoh, Alex Lawther, Tanya Reynolds, and Grace Savage.
The event draws inspiration from Charles Dickens’ own tradition of public charity readings, which began in 1853 to raise funds for local initiatives in Birmingham. The upcoming West End performance continues that legacy, adapting the 1843 classic to support individuals experiencing homelessness across Great Britain. Proceeds from ticket sales will directly fund Crisis’s year-round services, including housing advice, employment training, and emergency shelter.
Director Bessie Carter noted that the themes within Dickens' narrative remain highly relevant today, as thousands of families across the country continue to face financial hardship and housing insecurity. Actor Adjoa Andoh added that the story serves as a timely reminder of shared human value, emphasizing the importance of expanding access to safe, stable accommodation.
Crisis Chief Executive Matt Downie highlighted the severity of the ongoing housing crisis, stating that the funds raised from the West End reading will help provide critical support for people working to rebuild their lives away from homelessness.
Tickets for the one-night-only performance go on general sale at 12pm on Tuesday, 1 September 2026, via the Nimax Theatres website.
