Production company Melting Pot has announced the development of Young Romantics, a new British coming-of-age musical featuring music and lyrics by Bastille frontman Dan Smith. Produced by Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska, the project explores the stormy summer gathering that inspired some of literature's most iconic gothic works.
Set at Villa Diodati on the shores of Lake Geneva, the show centers on five young radicals—Mary Godwin, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, Claire Clairmont, and Dr. John Polidori—trapped in a web of love triangles and exiled from polite London society. When Byron challenges the group to write a horror story during a week of terrible weather, the game sets off a dramatic series of events, laying the groundwork for Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Polidori’s The Vampyre.
Speaking about the project, Smith highlighted how the historical event serves as a mirror to modern themes in 2026, including artistic integrity, freedom of speech, gender equality, and the complexities of youth confronting trauma and societal pressure. Producers Friend and Osmolska noted that pairing Smith’s signature songwriting with the mysterious narrative aims to bring a fresh perspective to British musical theatre.
The musical marks another expansion into stage and screen compositions for Smith, the Grammy-nominated and Brit Award-winning creative force behind Bastille. His previous composition credits include collaborating with Hans Zimmer on the score for the BBC's Planet Earth III, writing original songs for the series KAOS, and scoring the film Nostalgie. He is also currently developing the feature film Annie Oakley Hanging alongside producer Shannon McIntosh.
Melting Pot, whose previous theatre and film credits include the Oscar-winning film The Father and the stage adaptation of Life of Pi, will manage the development of Young Romantics. Further details regarding the production's creative team, casting, and staging timeline are expected to be announced in the coming months.
