Allegra has officially celebrated its triumphant West End opening night at the Harold Pinter Theatre, welcoming a glittering array of theatrical stars and special guests. Following a highly successful, critically acclaimed tour across the United Kingdom that pulled in a slew of five-star rave reviews, this joyful and heartwarming new comedy by Peter Quilter is set for a strictly limited summer residency running until Saturday 8th August.
The West End premiere marks a major theatrical milestone as national treasure Dame Maureen Lipman returns to the London stage following her widely acclaimed performance in Rose in 2023. The ambitious new production beautifully reunites Lipman with three-time Olivier Award-winning Director and Choreographer Stephen Mear, exactly 28 years after the duo first collaborated on the National Theatre’s landmark revival of Oklahoma!.
The star-studded opening night saw a wealth of prominent stage icons gather to celebrate, including Sally Ann Triplett, Gerard McCarthy, Lesley Joseph, Dame Arlene Phillips, and Lorna Dallas. Lipman leads a stellar principal cast that features John Middleton (Emmerdale), Elizabeth Bower (Trollied), and Bailey Patrick (London Kills).
The narrative centers on Allegra (Lipman), a woman so completely consumed by inner joy that she cannot stop herself from bursting into full theatrical song and dance wherever she goes—whether at home, in the street, or inside busy local shops. While these musical outbursts are sometimes just a fantasy playing out in her mind, they often manifest as loud, chaotic public performances that disrupt her entire village. As her brother Ronen and her dedicated carer Anna scramble to navigate her eccentricities and pacify the local policeman, the play evolves into a deeply moving comedy. Beyond the spectacular song and dance sequences, Quilter's script offers a touching, emotional examination of how a beautiful mind can slowly begin to disappear.
Produced by Thomas Hopkins Productions and SAMS Entertainment, the show features creative design work from Justin Williams, Samuel Biondolillo, and Russell Ditchfield. Production images by Piers Allardyce have been released to mark the premiere, and tickets are available through the official venue box office.
