CAPITAL THEATRES has announced the launch of an innovative Associate Artist Scheme designed to place accessibility and inclusion at the absolute center of the Scottish performing arts sector. The groundbreaking initiative will officially offer crucial professional development opportunities for mid-career theatre makers, with a specific focus on creating original stage work for people living with dementia and children with complex or additional support needs.

The organization is currently seeking two dedicated Scotland-based Associate Artists to join the program, which is set to run for 18 months from October 2026 until March 2028. Each selected artist will receive a comprehensive, bespoke package of financial and professional assistance to help nurture their practice. This includes a £10,000 funding grant, with £5,000 ringfenced for personal time and professional development activities, and the remaining £5,000 allocated directly toward their chosen creative project.

In addition to financial backing, the participants will benefit from ongoing mentorship from the internal team, outside consultation from leading industry specialists, and facilitated opportunities to gain vital practical experience working directly with their target audiences. The scheme also provides a dedicated five-day residency in the Studio Theatre to allow the artists to conduct research and development for their newly envisioned productions.

The initiative operates under the umbrella of the venue's wider Open for Creatives program, which seeks to provide space, resources, and experimentation opportunities for regional talent. Every year, Capital Theatres connects with over 2,000 individuals through its award-winning dementia program, alongside engaging with more than 2,000 children and educators across Edinburgh's additional support needs school network.

The scheme directly addresses an increasing cultural demand for high-quality work built around underserved audiences from the very beginning of the creative process. Previous institutional collaborations include partnerships with Barrowland Ballet on The Unexpected Gift and dementia specialist Magdalena Schamberger on Curious Shoes, bringing specialized theatrical performances to care homes and day centers across Edinburgh and the Lothians. Application details are available on the official website.
