LEAR has unveiled a first look at its striking new production images as the highly anticipated revival officially opens at the Pitlochry Festival Theatre. Captured by renowned photographer Tommy Ga-Ken Wan, the newly released photographs offer audiences a glimpse into Finn den Hertog’s visceral new adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy, which features acclaimed actress Maureen Beattie taking on the iconic title role as the monarch.
Running at the scenic Perthshire venue until 1 August 2026, the newly staged production marks a major milestone for the institution. It is the first time in the history of the Pitlochry Festival Theatre that Shakespeare's masterpiece has been staged. The monumental production arrives during a significant year of celebration, coinciding with both the venue's 75th anniversary and the inaugural season of Hollywood star Alan Cumming stepping into his role as Artistic Director.
The fresh production images showcase an exceptional ensemble of some of Scotland’s most celebrated theatre artists. Alongside Beattie's central performance as the crumbling monarch, the cast features Forbes Masson as Gloucester, Lindsey Campbell as Regan, Ali Craig as Oswald, and Ailsa Davidson pulling double duty as Cordelia and the Fool. They are joined on stage by Jenny Hulse as Goneril, Reuben Joseph as Edmund, Beruce Khan as Albany, Mercy Ojelade as Kent, and Dylan Read as Edgar. Together, the powerhouse cast delivers a raw, contemporary exploration of power, legacy, and fractured family dynamics.
Behind the scenes, director and adapter Finn den Hertog leads a distinguished creative team. The production is designed by Emma Bailey, best known for her work on the global musical phenomenon Six, with movement direction by Vicki Manderson, lighting design by Kai Fischer, and sound design by Mark Melville. Adding to the atmospheric nature of the production, the show features the haunting, evocative music of the award-winning Scottish traditional musician Brìghde Chaimbeul. Tickets and information regarding accessible performance dates are available now through the official box office.
