Award-winning Manchester theatre company Box of Tricks has officially announced the world premiere of How Soon is Now?, a brand-new indie musical written by acclaimed playwright Siân Owen. The production is scheduled to open at the Lowry on October 1, 2026, serving as the launchpad for an extensive subsequent tour across the United Kingdom.
The original musical transports audiences back to New Year’s Eve in 1997 Manchester, capturing the distinct electricity, hope, and uncertainty of a generation-defining era on the cusp of a new millennium. The narrative follows three young women on a club dancefloor, navigating the complex highs and lows of female friendship, empowerment, and self-discovery. The production is uniquely set to a live soundtrack of iconic 1990s indie anthems, featuring seminal music from the likes of The Smiths, Radiohead, and The Stone Roses.
The production stands as the most ambitious project to date for Box of Tricks as the company celebrates its milestone 20th anniversary of championing original Northern voices. Playwright Siân Owen, whose extensive credits include writing additional material for the National Theatre’s Under Milk Wood, described the show as a heartfelt love song to music and community, designed to make audiences feel as though they have stepped directly into a bustling night club.
The staging features a highly accomplished creative team, including set design by Hannah Sibai, movement direction from Chris Brown, and musical direction from prominent multi-instrumentalist Vidar Norheim. Box of Tricks Artistic Director Adam Quayle noted that bringing such a bold, mid-scale touring production to life provides a vital reminder of the enduring power of human connection, even during challenging cultural times.
Following its initial premiere in Salford, the production will embark on an expansive national touring itinerary throughout October and November. Confirmed stops include dedicated theatrical runs in Chester, Lancaster, Wakefield, Bradford, Exeter, Bristol, Stockton, Ipswich, Sheffield, and Scarborough. Tickets for the world premiere season are officially on sale now.
