OVO has announced that a brand-new theatrical adaptation of "Sherlock Holmes" will officially open this summer’s 12th annual Roman Theatre Open Air Festival. Running from Friday, June 5 through Saturday, June 20, 2026, the gripping new production will take place at the historic Roman Theatre of Verulamium in St Albans, the oldest producing theatre venue in the United Kingdom.

Adapted and directed by Royal Television Society award-winner Mark O’Sullivan, the madcap whirlwind mystery offers a fresh reimagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic detective stories. The production weaves together several of the author's most famous cases alongside lesser-known literary gems, transporting audiences from the foggy streets of iconic London to remote country retreats and dramatic mountain peaks.

In an impressive theatrical twist, the production features a tight ensemble of just four actors multi-roling to bring 25 distinct, colorful characters to life. The versatile cast includes Anna MacLeod Franklin, Max Gallagher, Lachlan McCall, and Jessica Vickers. O’Sullivan, an acclaimed comedy writer for Channel 4 and ITV, has deliberately amplified the humorous elements of the original text, promising an evening filled with witty antics, while anchoring the narrative in the genuine heart and friendship shared between Holmes and Dr. Watson. The performance ultimately explores the power of logical observation while addressing underlying themes of social injustice.

Adam Nichols, OVO Founder and Artistic Director, expressed delight in launching the summer festival with one of the company's signature literary adaptations, noting the inherent magic of experiencing live theatre under the stars against such a rich historical backdrop.

Now in its 12th year, OVO’s flagship Roman Theatre Open Air Festival has cemented its status as a major cornerstone of the UK’s outdoor cultural calendar, welcoming over 16,000 visitors each summer. The full 2026 festival season will continue through August 31, offering a vibrant mix of outdoor theatre, live music, and comedy. Tickets for the general public are officially on sale now, with prices starting from £15, alongside multi-buy festival season passes.
