Greenwich Theatre Productions has officially announced the ensemble cast for its inaugural summer repertory season, featuring bold new adaptations of "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Little Mermaid: Song of the Sea." Both family-friendly productions will be performed in alternating repertory by a single, versatile resident acting company from July 3 through August 23.
Launching the summer season from July 3 to July 25, the theatre will present a music-infused, contemporary reimagining of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." In a notable creative twist, the production explores a female interpretation of Romeo, portrayed by Blossom Timothy, opposite Ava Honey making her professional debut as Juliet. The creative team emphasizes that this adaptation focuses on the universal nature of youthful love, intense adolescent emotion, and a backdrop of generational family conflict rather than traditional gender roles.
The stellar local cast also features Charlotte Harwood, Nikita Johal, Matt Penson, and James Aldred, who pulls double duty as both an ensemble performer and the production's musical director. Artistic director James Haddrell aims for the staging to establish a permanent summer Shakespeare tradition in southeast London, bridging the gap between varied generations of local theatregoers.
Following the tragic romance, the company transitions seamlessly into "The Little Mermaid: Song of the Sea," running from July 31 through August 23. Written by acclaimed pantomime artist Anthony Spargo, the production relocates the classic fairy tale to the rugged Cornish coast line. This specific steampunk-inspired musical adaptation stars Nikita Johal as the fierce title heroine alongside Ava Honey as Crabby and Matt Penson as Trevelyan, incorporating original puppetry and character-driven narrative storytelling.
The ambitious summer season represents a major milestone for the newly formed Greenwich Theatre Productions arm, which was launched this year to expand the venue's off-West End producing footprint.
