The Stage Debut Awards have officially confirmed their return for 2026, with global streaming giant Netflix returning as the headline sponsor for a second consecutive year. As the industry prepares for a landmark tenth anniversary in 2027, the annual event remains the only major UK theatre awards dedicated exclusively to recognizing breakthrough performers and behind-the-scenes creatives making their professional debuts. This year’s highly anticipated ceremony will take place at 8 Northumberland Avenue in London on Sunday 27 September 2026.
Official submissions are now open for debut performers, writers, directors, designers, composers, lyricists, and book writers who made their professional debuts between 18 July 2025 and 9 July 2026. Eligible talent, alongside their agents and producers, can put forward considerations via the official website until the closing deadline of 25 June 2026. The final shortlist will be revealed to the public on Thursday 20 August 2026. Over the last decade, the event has become a crucial fixture in the theatrical calendar, championing a new generation of creators who have frequently gone on to achieve Olivier and Tony Award success.
The awards will honor excellence across eight distinct competitive categories, including Best Performer in a Play, Best Performer in a Musical, and specialized creative fields. Notably, the Best West End Debut Performer remains the only category decided entirely by a public vote. Last year, theatre audiences selected Olivier Award-winner Rachel Zegler for her celebrated leading role in Evita at the London Palladium. Zegler joins a prestigious list of previous debut winners, including Spitlip, Rob Madge, and Rose Ayling-Ellis.
Netflix’s continued headline sponsorship reinforces the company's broader commitment to championing emerging creative voices and sustaining the future of British theatre. Anne Mensah, Vice President of UK Content at Netflix, expressed delight at extending the partnership, noting the importance of celebrating artists at the very beginning of their professional careers. Alistair Smith, Managing Director of The Stage, added that giving breakthrough talent recognition when it matters most is incredibly exciting, especially as the organization looks toward a decade of celebrating debut artistry.
