Producer powerhouses Chris Harper Productions and Sonia Friedman Productions, in association with Hope Mill Theatre, have announced a major new production of Jonathan Larson’s Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning rock opera, Rent. Marking the 30th anniversary of its legendary Broadway premiere, the highly anticipated musical will begin performances at London’s Duke of York’s Theatre on September 26, 2026, with an official opening night set for October 8.

In a major casting coup, the production will feature Stranger Things favorite Gaten Matarazzo making his West End debut in the central role of Mark. Matarazzo, who won a Screen Actors Guild Award for his portrayal of Dustin Henderson in the Netflix phenomenon, is no stranger to the stage, having recently starred as Tobias in Broadway's acclaimed revival of Sweeney Todd.

The production is directed by Olivier Award-winner Luke Sheppard, fresh off his sweeping success with Paddington The Musical. Sheppard previously helmed a critically adored, intimate staging of Rent at Manchester's Hope Mill Theatre in 2020, which serves as the inspiration for this scaled-up West End reimagining.

“We were completely exhilarated when we first saw Luke Sheppard’s staging at the Hope Mill Theatre,” producers Chris Harper and Sonia Friedman said in a joint statement. “It felt immediate, emotional and utterly alive. Jonathan Larson’s musical remains as powerful and resonant as ever, and Luke has found a way to honour its legacy while making it feel thrillingly fresh.”

Sheppard expressed equal enthusiasm for returning to the material on a grander stage. “The opportunity to reimagine that production on a larger scale is a dream come true,” the director remarked. “This is Rent in the hands of a new generation of performers who love and adore this piece, and with Gaten Matarazzo playing Mark, it promises to be a thrilling experience.”

Based loosely on Puccini's La Bohème, Rent follows a tight-knit group of young, bohemian artists navigating love, creativity, and the devastating realities of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New York's East Village. Tickets go on sale today, May 19, 2026, at 12:00 noon, with the producers committing 10,000 tickets at £35 and under to ensure the landmark event remains accessible to theatergoers.
