Production images have been released for the pre-West End tour of Allegra, offering a first glimpse of national treasure Dame Maureen Lipman in the titular role. Captured by acclaimed photographer Marc Brenner, the images showcase Lipman alongside a stellar cast including John Middleton (Emmerdale), Elizabeth Bower (Midsomer Murders), and Bailey Patrick, as the production begins its journey across the UK.
Written by Olivier and Tony Award-nominated playwright Peter Quilter—the creative mind behind End of the Rainbow and Glorious!—Allegra is a vibrant, heart-warming comedy that explores the thin line between imagination and reality. The play follows Allegra, a woman possessed by an irresistible urge to sing. Whether she is at home, in the street, or at a local café, she bursts into song, occasionally accompanied by an orchestra that exists only in her mind—and sometimes, gloriously, in the real world.
The narrative centers on the delicate balance maintained by her devoted brother, Ronen (Middleton), and her patient carer, Anna (Bower). Together, they grapple with the central theme of the play: how to protect a loved one without dimming the unique light that defines them.
The production marks a significant milestone for Dame Maureen Lipman, representing her first UK tour in 20 years. Celebrated for her recent long-running role in Coronation Street and a legendary career spanning stage and screen, Lipman’s return to the touring circuit is one of the year's most anticipated theatrical events.
Directing and choreographing the production is three-time Olivier Award winner Stephen Mear, known for West End staples such as Sunset Boulevard, Mary Poppins, and Hello, Dolly!. The creative team is rounded out by set and costume designer Justin Williams and lighting designer Samuel Biondolillo.
The tour is currently playing at the Theatre Royal Brighton before heading to High Wycombe, Aberdeen, and Malvern. The production arrives in London at the Richmond Theatre on June 8, which will serve as the National Press Night, followed by dates in Windsor, Glasgow, and Bath. Tickets are available now for this strictly limited season.
