The global cultural phenomenon Death Note: The Musical is set to make its highly anticipated return to London, securing a strictly limited six-week engagement at the Barbican Theatre. Opening on July 30, 2026, this newly reimagined production features a revised script and fresh musical numbers alongside the original acclaimed score. Today, producers confirmed that rising star Xander Pang will take on the lead role of Light Yagami, while the versatile Colin Ryan will star as the enigmatic master detective L.

Based on the bestselling manga series by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, the story follows Light, a brilliant high school student who discovers a notebook that grants him the power to kill anyone whose name he writes within its pages. What begins as a crusade to eliminate criminals and create a "new world" quickly devolves into a high-stakes psychological battle when the mysterious detective L is tasked with unmasking the unseen killer known as "Kira."

Xander Pang joins the production following his appearance in The Lightning Thief at The Other Palace. Reflecting on the role, Pang expressed his excitement about bringing the unique world of Death Note to such an iconic venue. His co-star, Colin Ryan, brings an extensive theatrical pedigree to the role of L, with past credits including work at the RSC and Shakespeare’s Globe. Ryan noted his pride in "stepping into the mind of L" for this definitive theatrical incarnation of the story.

The production features music by Tony, Grammy, and Emmy nominee Frank Wildhorn, with lyrics by Jack Murphy and a book by Ivan Menchell. Directing this new vision is Stephen Whitson, known for his work on Hamilton and Moulin Rouge!, alongside a creative team that includes Olivier-nominated choreographer Fabian Aloise and Emmy-nominated designer Jon Bausor.

Since its manga debut in 2003, Death Note has sold over 30 million copies and inspired hit anime, live-action films, and a Netflix series. Following record-breaking concert versions at the London Palladium in 2023, this full-scale Barbican production promises to be the ultimate experience for fans and newcomers alike. Running until September 12, the show invites audiences to explore the fatal consequences of justice and power.
