Polka Theatre has unveiled the full programme for its 2026 Big Dreams Festival, a vibrant celebration of theatre and creativity for children aged 0–8. Running from Saturday 19 to Sunday 20 September, the weekend features an international line-up of performances, interactive installations, and free family activities, preceded by a dedicated Industry Day on Friday 18 September.
The festival kicks off on Saturday with high-energy music from World Book Day Ambassador MC Grammar, followed by the magical deep-sea adventure The Tale of the Loneliest Whale. International puppetry also takes centre stage with Multicolore, a visually rich production from France. Sunday’s schedule includes a Family Rave for the youngest dancers, a live drawalong with beloved illustrator Nick Sharratt, and sensory-rich performances from Hurly Burly and Mind The Gap. Throughout the weekend, families can also access Hopeful Monsters, a free all-day cinema and puppetry experience.
On Friday 18 September, Polka will host an Industry Day designed for theatre-makers and professionals. The day features scratch performances from Polka’s Catapult artist development programme, showcasing rising talents like Arlo Wilson and Jeanzia Guan.
Key panel discussions will tackle the realities of the sector, including "You Shouldn’t Make That for Children," featuring leaders from The Egg and The Unicorn, and a session on the logistical challenges of touring early years work. Attendees can also participate in creative workshops aimed at expanding their approach to play-based storytelling.
Artistic Director Helen Matravers describes Big Dreams as a "melting pot of ideas" that empowers both families and theatre-makers. As a vital community hub, Polka continues to lead the sector in accessibility, offering free play spaces and extensive creative learning projects that reached over 21,000 children last year.
Tickets for festival performances are £13, with multi-buy discounts available. Booking is now open via the Polka Theatre website or box office.
