Four years after its staggering, sell-out premiere, Deborah Warner’s Olivier Award-nominated production of Peter Grimes returns to the Royal Opera House. Running from May 5 to May 28, 2026, this first revival brings Benjamin Britten’s bleak operatic parable back to the stage with much of its original, critically acclaimed cast.
At the heart of this production is the return of renowned tenor Allan Clayton in the title role. His 2022 portrayal of the ostracized fisherman was heralded as a career-defining performance, capturing the agonizing descent of a man crushed by the weight of community suspicion. Joining him once again is Bryn Terfel as the menacing Captain Balstrode and Maria Bengtsson as Ellen Orford, the schoolmistress who offers Grimes a fleeting hope of redemption.
The revival also sees the return of key ensemble players, including Jacques Imbrailo as Ned Keene and Catherine Wyn-Rogers as Auntie. Under the baton of Music Director Jakub Hruša, the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House will navigate Britten’s haunting, sea-drenched score, marking Hruša’s first time conducting the full opera.
Warner’s production is a cornerstone of The Royal Opera’s Britten cycle, which reimagines the composer's works within contemporary settings to highlight their enduring social relevance. This staging moves away from quaint coastal tropes to explore the darker side of human nature: the thin line between justice and mob mentality. By focusing on a small seaside community gripped by paranoia, the production offers a poignant, often terrifying demonstration of the conflict between the individual and the collective.
The revival reunites Warner’s elite creative team, including set designer Michael Levine, whose stark visuals capture the unforgiving nature of the coast, and costume designer Luis Carvalho. Choreography is provided by Warner’s long-standing collaborator Kim Brandstrup, with atmospheric lighting by Peter Mumford.
With tickets starting at just £10, the Royal Opera House continues its commitment to making world-class opera accessible. For those seeking a production that is as intellectually piercing as it is musically profound, Peter Grimes remains an essential theatrical experience. Tickets are available now at rbo.org.uk.
