The National Theatre has released a poignant set of rehearsal images as its global phenomenon, War Horse, prepares for a triumphant return to the Olivier stage this summer. Nearly two decades after its 2007 world premiere, the production—the most successful play in the theatre’s history—will run from 16 May to 30 July 2026.

Based on Michael Morpurgo’s beloved novel and adapted by Nick Stafford, War Horse is a timeless tale of friendship set against the brutal backdrop of the First World War. It follows young Albert Narracott, played by Tom Sturgess, on a perilous journey from rural Devon to the trenches of France to find his beloved horse, Joey, who has been sold to the cavalry.

The new rehearsal photography by Brinkhoff-Moegenburg offers a "behind-the-scenes" glimpse into the technical artistry required to bring Joey and his rival Topthorn to life. These life-sized horses, created by the Handspring Puppet Company, are operated by a highly skilled team of puppeteers who replicate the breathing, neighing, and galloping of real animals with astonishing precision.

Since its debut, War Horse has been seen by over 8.8 million people across 100 cities. It has amassed more than 25 major accolades, including the Tony Award for Best Play. This summer's revival, directed by Tom Morris and revival director Katie Henry, aims to captivate a new generation of theatregoers with its stirring musical score by Adrian Sutton and John Tams’ iconic folk songs.

The expansive cast includes Anita Adam Gabay, Stephen Beckett, and Jo Castleton, supported by a world-class creative team including:

Set and Costume Design: Rae Smith

Puppetry Direction: Matthew Forbes

Movement and Horse Choreography: Toby Sedgwick

Lighting Design: Rob Casey

This strictly limited engagement represents a full-circle moment for the production, returning to the very stage where its journey began. Tickets are available now for this legendary piece of British theatre, recommended for ages 10 and up.
