The UK’s theatrical landscape is about to receive a major spotlight, but this time the focus isn't on the actors—it's on the architecture. To mark its 50th anniversary, the Theatres Trust has officially opened applications for the first-ever Great British Theatres Awards.

This landmark event aims to recognize the vital role that theatre buildings play as cultural hubs and community connectors. Unlike traditional ceremonies that honor performances, these awards celebrate the physical spaces where creativity flourishes and audiences gather.

Submissions are now live via the Theatres Trust website and will remain open until Thursday, 11 June 2026, at 5:00 PM. The Trust is encouraging a wide range of participants to step forward, from theatre owners and local authorities to architects and theatre consultants. Public nominations are also welcomed to ensure the nation’s favorite local spots are represented.

"Since announcing these awards, one message has come through clearly: our theatre spaces and cultural places deserve this national recognition," says Joshua McTaggart, CEO of Theatres Trust. "As we mark 50 years of championing the nation’s theatres, this will be a significant moment of shared celebration."

The awards feature ten open categories designed to capture the full spectrum of the UK's theatrical infrastructure:

Great New Build & Great Renovation: Honoring projects completed in the last five years.

Great Found Space: Celebrating venues created in repurposed or non-traditional buildings.

Great Community Connection & Public Space: Recognizing theatres that go above and beyond to offer a warm welcome.

Great Green Theatre: Highlighting environmental sustainability in operations and design.

Shining Star: Awarded to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to saving or adapting theatre buildings.

In addition to these, two special honors—Great British Theatre 2026 and a Lifetime Achievement Award—will be presented by the judging panel.

The shortlist will be unveiled in September, with the inaugural ceremony set to take place on Monday, 2 November 2026, at the prestigious Central Hall Westminster in London.
