The magical world of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s STARLIGHT EXPRESS has inspired a massive wave of creativity across the British education system. Over 500 primary and secondary schools from across the UK recently participated in "I Am the Starlight," a nationwide competition celebrating the musical talent and stage presence of the next generation.
Launched to coincide with World Theatre Day, the competition invited students to record and upload their own renditions of the iconic title track, "Starlight Express." The response was overwhelming, with schools showcasing extraordinary vocal ability and choreography.
The entries were judged by a panel of experts, including current cast members Jade Marvin (Momma) and Asher Forth (Electra). After reviewing hundreds of submissions, children from St Dominic Savio Catholic Primary School and Westholme School were crowned winners, earning the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform live on the professional stage at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre.
"The standard of entries and the passion shown by students is incredibly moving," noted the judging panel. "It’s a powerful reminder of how important the arts are—giving young people a chance to build confidence and discover their creativity."
The initiative was supported by The School Trip, Young Voices, and Hal Leonard, the latter of which recently published the official Starlight Express songbook featuring new arrangements. These partnerships highlight the vital link between live theatre and the classroom, fostering collaboration and providing a "springboard" for potential future careers in the music industry.
While the competition celebrated the future of theatre, the current record-breaking production of STARLIGHT EXPRESS is approaching its final weeks. Having been seen by over 30 million people worldwide and winning seven What’s On Stage Awards, the London run must officially end on Sunday, 3 May 2026.
Fans have only three weeks left to experience the immersive "Starlight Auditorium" before the show prepares for a highly anticipated world tour.
