The National Theatre has unveiled a first look at its high-stakes, glittering new production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, which is currently commanding the Lyttelton theatre stage. Directed by the visionary Marianne Elliott (Angels in America), this major staging marks the first time Christopher Hampton’s acclaimed adaptation has appeared at the National Theatre, complete with a refreshed script for 2026.

A Thrilling Game of Love and Lies

Based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 epistolary novel, the play explores a world where reputation is a currency and desire is a weapon. Set among the opulent salons of the super-rich, the story follows the Marquise de Merteuil and the magnetic Vicomte de Valmont as they turn seduction into a cold-blooded strategy. However, as their private alliance devolves into a bitter rivalry, the fallout threatens to destroy everyone in their orbit.

A Powerhouse Cast

The production boasts a stellar leading trio. Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) stars as the calculating Merteuil, joined by Aidan Turner (Poldark, Rivals) as the predatory Valmont. Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick) makes her National Theatre debut, leading a cast that also includes Gabrielle Drake and Hannah van der Westhuysen.

Director Marianne Elliott has assembled a top-tier creative team to bring this "game of social warfare" to life, featuring set design by Rosanna Vize, costumes by Natalie Roar, and a score by composer Jasmin Kent Rodgman.

From the South Bank to the Big Screen

For those unable to secure tickets for the London run, which concludes on 6 June 2026, the National Theatre is ensuring global access. The production will be broadcast to cinemas worldwide via NT Live starting 25 June 2026, continuing the charity's mission to bring high-quality British theatre to international audiences.

Assisted performances, including captioned, BSL-interpreted, and relaxed screenings, are scheduled throughout May to ensure the widest possible access to this "thrilling" theatrical event.

Tickets are available now at nationaltheatre.org.uk.
