Salford is getting ready to "Get’cha Head in the Game" as Australian superstar Jason Donovan joins the cast of Disney’s High School Musical.
In an exciting announcement from Hope Mill Theatre and Chris Harper Productions, the legendary singer and actor has been cast as Coach Bolton. Donovan joins a stellar lineup for this landmark production at The Lowry, including Tobias Turley as Troy, Leonor Correia as Gabriella, Caitlin Tipping as Sharpay, and Luke Bayer as Ryan.
Marking two decades since the cultural phenomenon first hit screens, this production is set to be the UK’s first non-replica staging of the musical. Opening on 22 August 2026, the show’s run has already been extended due to popular demand, now playing until 19 September 2026.
The Lyric Theatre will undergo a radical transformation for the event. The space is being reimagined as an immersive basketball court, complete with on-stage seating and an extended stage to pull the audience directly into the halls of East High. Fans can expect high-energy renditions of all the classic hits, including Breaking Free, Stick to the Status Quo, and the anthemic We’re All In This Together.
Jason Donovan’s storied career spans decades, from his iconic role as Scott Robinson in Neighbours to his record-breaking run in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Fresh off his "Doin’ Fine Encore" tour, Donovan expressed his personal connection to the show:
"High School Musical was such a massive part of my kids' early childhood... I’m delighted to be joining this new reimagined theatrical experience 20 years on from when I first discovered the film."
Directed by Hope Mill founders Joseph Houston and William Whelton, the production promises a fresh, bold take on the Disney favorite. Tickets are on sale now, starting from £26.
Please note that Jason Donovan is scheduled to perform through Friday, 18 September. For the full performance schedule and to secure your seats, visit thelowry.com.
