To mark half a century of protecting the UK’s architectural cultural heritage, the Theatres Trust has launched the Great British Theatres Awards. This new nationwide initiative shifts the spotlight from the performances on stage to the very buildings that house them—the "beating hearts" of communities across the country.

Celebrating the "Magic Spaces"

While most industry accolades honor actors and directors, these awards celebrate the civic landmarks and cultural engines that drive local economies and social connection. Joshua McTaggart, CEO of Theatres Trust, noted that in the charity's 50th year, it is vital to champion everything from grassroots community venues to landmark new builds.

The awards will culminate in a grand ceremony on Monday, 2 November 2026, at Central Hall Westminster.

10 Categories of Excellence

The Trust is inviting nominations from the public, theatre operators, local authorities, and architects across ten open categories:

Great New Build & Great Renovation: Recognizing projects completed in the last five years.

Great Amateur Theatre & Great Found Space: Celebrating non-traditional and community-run venues.

Great Community Connection & Great Public Space: Honoring theatres that go "above and beyond" to welcome everyone.

Great Use of Space & Great Placemaking Partner: Awarding innovative design and local authority investment.

Great Green Theatre: Highlighting environmental sustainability in operations and infrastructure.

Great British Theatres Shining Star: Recognizing individuals who have saved or adapted buildings for their communities.

In addition to these, a panel of expert judges will select the Great British Theatre 2026 and present a Lifetime Achievement Award for long-term contribution to cultural infrastructure.

Key Dates for Nominees

Entries officially open on Thursday, 16 April 2026, via the Theatres Trust website. Applicants must provide a 500-word statement and supporting materials by the deadline of 5:00 PM on Thursday, 11 June 2026.

The shortlist will be revealed in September, coinciding with the release of tickets for the November ceremony. As the centerpiece of the Trust's 50th-anniversary celebrations, the awards look back on five decades of protection while envisioning the next generation of British theatrical spaces.
