This March, the Barbican Level G Hub Space will be transformed into an arena for the most intimate dramatic encounters in the city. As part of the Scene Change season, the Barbican is proud to host the UK premiere of Theatre for One, a landmark production from Landmark Productions and Octopus Theatricals that challenges the very nature of the performer-audience relationship.
A One-on-One Theatrical Encounter
Conceived by Artistic Director Christine Jones, Theatre for One is a unique experience that is part confessional and part peep-show. Inside a specially constructed booth, a single actor performs a five-minute play for a single audience member. The production showcases the pinnacle of Irish storytelling, featuring six short plays written specifically for the project by a mix of celebrated icons and rising stars, including Enda Walsh, Marina Carr, Mark O’Rowe, Joy Nesbitt, Louise O’Neill, and Katie Holly.
The experience is entirely free and operates on a first-come, first-served basis. Audiences are invited to join the queue in the foyer and wait for their surprise encounter, breaking down the traditional barriers of the grand stage for a fleeting, five-minute moment of pure connection.
Performance Schedule and Access
The booth will be active daily from Thursday 12 March to Sunday 22 March 2026 (excluding Monday 16 March). Performances run in two sessions:
Afternoon: 12:00 PM – 3:30 PM
Evening: 5:00 PM – 8:30 PM
In a commitment to inclusivity, Sunday 22 March has been designated for accessible performances. On this date, all slots will be wheelchair accessible, and wheelchair users will be given priority in the queue.
A Global Phenomenon
Since its debut in 2003, Theatre for One has captivated audiences in the US, Canada, and Ireland. Now, with the support of Culture Ireland, it brings its "singular theatrical encounter" to the heart of London. Toni Racklin, Head of Theatre & Dance at the Barbican, noted the joy of presenting this "one-of-a-kind experience" as the venue continues to welcome the public to experience theatre in a new, transformative light.
