The institutional halls of The Old Vic are crackling with a new, rebellious energy as rehearsals officially get underway for a major revival of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. This highly anticipated production is set to run from 01 April to 23 May 2026, with an official press night scheduled for Wednesday 15 April.
The rehearsal room offers a first glimpse into the intense dynamic between the patients and the staff of the psychiatric ward. Leading the charge as the charismatic and disruptive Randle P. McMurphy is Aaron Pierre, whose presence in the rehearsal images suggests a raw, magnetic interpretation of the role. Squaring off against him is Michelle Gomez, stepping into the formidable shoes of Nurse Ratched. Gomez’s reputation for playing chillingly precise antagonists promises a high-stakes psychological battle between order and chaos.
The supporting ensemble brings together some of the most exciting talents currently on the London stage. Giles Terera stars as Dale Harding, the intellectual foil to McMurphy’s bravado, while Kedar Williams-Stirling takes on the vulnerable role of Billy Bibbit. The "men of the ward" are rounded out by a stellar group including Javone Prince (Cheswick), Jason Pennycooke (Martini), and Mo Sesay (Scanlon). Arthur Boan portrays the silent, observant Chief Bromden, a pivotal figure in Ken Kesey’s classic story of systemic oppression.
Set against the backdrop of an authoritarian regime, the production explores timeless themes of individual freedom and the definition of sanity. The rehearsal process reveals a focus on the physical comedy and claustrophobic tension inherent in the script, as the cast navigates the rigid structure of Ratched’s ward.
With a cast of this caliber and the historic surroundings of The Old Vic, tickets are expected to be in high demand.
