Rehearsals have officially commenced today at the National Theatre for one of the most anticipated stage events of the spring: the world premiere of Winsome Pinnock’s gripping new play, The Authenticator. While Pinnock is a celebrated pillar of British playwriting—best known for the seminal Leave Taking—this production marks the historic first time one of her works has premiered at the National.

A Masterclass in Psychological Suspense

Set to play in the intimate Dorfman Theatre, The Authenticator is described as a gothic psychological thriller that digs deep into the foundations of British history and family legacy. The story follows Fenella Harford (Sylvestra Le Touzel), an eccentric artist who inherits her family’s sprawling stately home. Upon discovering a hidden stash of diaries, Fenella enlists the help of a young academic, Marva (Cherrelle Skeete), to verify their contents.

The pair is joined by Marva’s brilliant but frequently overlooked mentor, Abi (Rakie Ayola). As the three women painstakingly work to authenticate the documents, they realize that the secrets buried within Harford Hall are far darker and more systemic than they ever dared to imagine. It is a story about who is allowed to tell the truth—and who is forced to bury it.

A Creative Reunion

The production reunites Pinnock with Director and National Theatre Artistic Associate Miranda Cromwell. The pair previously garnered critical acclaim for their collaboration on Rockets and Blue Lights, and Cromwell brings a formidable reputation following her visionary work on Death of a Salesman.

The artistic team is rounded out by world-class talent, including set designer Jon Bausor, lighting designer Aideen Malone, and composer Femi Temowo, ensuring that the gothic atmosphere of Harford Hall is as visceral as the performances.
