This February, the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch (QTH) invites audiences to revisit one of the 20th century’s most audacious masterpieces. Joe Orton’s Loot, a savage, dark farce that once scandalized the British public, arrives in a bold new production directed by the award-winning Bethany Pitts.
Set to run from 19 February to 7 March, Loot remains a biting critique of social hypocrisy. The story follows two young thieves, Dennis and Hal, who pull off a bank heist right next door to the funeral parlour where Dennis works. In a desperate bid to hide the spoils, they stash the cash in the only "safe" place available: the coffin of Hal’s recently deceased mother.
What follows is a relentless whirlwind of escalating absurdity. As the relentless Inspector Truscott closes in, the pair must navigate a maze of cover-ups involving a predatory nurse and Hal’s grieving father. Through physical farce and razor-sharp dialogue, Orton holds a mirror to the integrity of the police, the rigidity of the Catholic Church, and the strange ways society handles death.
A Modern Revival of a Classic
Though now considered a modern classic, Loot had a rocky start. Its 1965 premiere—starring icons like Kenneth Williams and Ian McShane—faced heavy censorship and mixed reviews. It wasn't until the text was restored and the play was revived a year later that it won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play, cementing Orton’s legacy as a revolutionary voice in working-class culture.
This production marks a significant milestone for director Bethany Pitts, representing her first lead on a mid-scale stage. Known for her work on contemporary political texts, Pitts notes that Orton’s vision feels more relevant than ever. "In a world where truth is a commodity," she says, "Orton's themes of police corruption, hypocrisy, and greed hit home anew today."
