“You’re looking for a monster, not a man.”JACK reimagines the cult story of the most feared and notorious serial killer in British history. This queer, gothic, and punky brand-new musical by Sahar Malaika and Samuel Phillips captures the essence of Victorian London in a chokehold of frenzied fear.
The victims of Jack the Ripper continue to grow in their number and the police are none the wiser as to how these women have ended up just so unfortunate. Drunkards lurk in the shadows, prostitutes huddle in the light, and the press turns to spiral and sensationalise the brutality of the Ripper until the name lingers on everyone’s lips. As London searches to reveal the truth, the mythic JACK becomes more tightly woven into the cultural fabric of Victorian Britain.
Award-winning theatre company MUSKETEER PRODUCTIONS champions new writers and diverse storytelling, and was initially founded as a student production company at the University of Oxford. The company is led by Sav Sood, whose production credits include Troy Story (O’Reilly Theatre, 2023), Sampi (Oxford Playhouse, Burton Taylor 2023), and Comedy of Errors (Wadham College, 2023).
JACK is written by Sahar Malaika, a writer and musician who currently works in television, and is a member of the Roundhouse Centre 59, founded by Daniel Kaluuya. The score is written by Samuel Phillips, a multi-instrumentalist composer and sound designer who recently graduated with a first-class degree in Music from the University of Oxford. Previously a member of the British Theatre Academy, Samuel has taught musical theatre internationally and his music and arrangements have contributed to five-star productions across the UK, Germany, and China.
JACK has received overwhelmingly positive praise selling out every performance across Oxford and Edinburgh including its extra shows. Musketeer presents a reignition of the late-nineteenth century as Jack’s victims, a chaotic investigation, and an incendiary publicity campaign seek to reveal the identity of Britain’s bloodiest murderer.
