The inspiring true story at the heart of the award-winning film Pride is being adapted into a brand-new British musical, set for its world premiere at the National Theatre in London in 2026. This announcement, made today by P&P Productions and the National Theatre, confirms the much-anticipated stage version will run on the Dorfman stage from June 11 to September 12, 2026.

The musical reunites director Matthew Warchus (Matilda The Musical) and writer Stephen Beresford (The Last of the Haussmans), the creative team behind the beloved 2014 film. Pride tells the remarkable true story of the 1984 miners’ strike, when a small group of gay men and lesbians formed Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) and bravely lent their support to a beleaguered pit village in South Wales.

This "funny, fierce and full of heart" production will feature original music by Christopher Nightingale, Josh Cohen, and DJ Walde. The score is set to be a vibrant mix of protest anthems, pop, rock, disco, and the traditional Welsh choral style, perfectly capturing the spirit of two threatened communities finding common ground.

Before its London run, the musical will have a special preview run at the Sherman Theatre in Cardiff from March 31 to April 18, 2026.

Director Matthew Warchus expressed his excitement, stating that directing the film was "one of the greatest joys and privileges of my career," and he looks forward to making the emotional and inspiring story "sing" on stage. Writer Stephen Beresford added that the "soaring, epic nature of this story seemed tailor-made for musical theatre."

Tickets for the world premiere run go on general sale from 10 am on Friday, November 14, 2025.
