A new one-man musical exploring the tumultuous early career of legendary fashion designer Yves Saint-Laurent is set to receive its first public presentation in London. Titled Ready To Wear, the musical, with Book, Music & Lyrics by Rachel Garnet, will be showcased at The Other Palace on Wednesday, October 15th, at 1:30 pm.
The 45-minute presentation is part of the Musical Bites series, a unique initiative by The Other Palace and Mercury Musical Developments that offers audiences a lunchtime taste of new musicals in development.
Ready To Wear chronicles a single, intimate day in the life of Saint-Laurent as he embarks on the daring act of launching his eponymous fashion house. The audience will watch in real-time as the designer, portrayed by Per Carminger, forges the first piece of his revolutionary ready-to-wear line.
The musical uses whimsy and sincerity to explore the designer’s resilience in the face of profound personal challenges. The story opens after Saint-Laurent has endured the setbacks of being fired from Dior, military abuse, and a hospitalisation following a suicide attempt—all hurdles he must overcome to dare to make art again.
Directed by Ed Blagrove, with arrangements by Robert Russel and piano accompaniment by Steve Corley, the creative team welcomes public and press feedback immediately following the showcase, helping to shape the musical's future development.
The Musical Bites series is a crucial part of supporting new British musicals, with all ticket revenue going directly to the creative team. Tickets for the presentation of Ready To Wear at The Other Palace Bar are priced at just £5.
