Fresh from its sold-out world premiere at White Lab Theatre at Central Saint Martins in London on May 7, 2025, A Journey to the West arrives at Camden Fringe 2025 with a condensed, high-impact version of its genre-blending psychodrama—fusing Chinese tradition with the emotional chaos of Gen Z identity.
Inspired by the classic epic, this bold reimagining follows Xiaohua, a sheltered international student whose surreal experiences in London mirror the mythic trials of the Monkey King. Confronting overprotection, cultural conflict, and emotional fragmentation, his journey becomes a symbol for the wider immigrant and global youth experience.
Blending Sichuan Opera face-changing, digital projection, electronic music, and live audience interaction, the show breaks conventional theatre form to deliver a poetic, unpredictable, and visually powerful performance.
