The Watermill Theatre recently received a visit from none other than Andrew Lloyd Webber, who attended their highly praised, actor-musician production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Joint CEOs Paul Hart (Artistic Director) and Claire Murray (Executive Director), along with the entire Watermill team, were delighted to welcome the iconic composer to their intimate Newbury venue.
Currently playing an expanded summer season until Sunday, September 21st, the Watermill’s production of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic rock musical has garnered a string of four- and five-star reviews. Its immense popularity is evident in its box office success, with over two-thirds of tickets for the entire run already sold just two weeks into performances. This trajectory puts Jesus Christ Superstar on track to become the Watermill Theatre’s best and fastest-selling production to date, drawing audiences from across the globe, including Australia, Japan, Singapore, and the USA.
After the show, Lloyd Webber spent time with the cast and crew, recalling his long-standing connection with the Watermill, which dates back to its conversion by David Gollins. He offered high praise for the team, stating, "Congratulations to the wonderful company of Jesus Christ Superstar at the Watermill Theatre. I wish you all the best for the rest of your run."
Claire Murray highlighted the significance of the production for the theatre's sustainability as an independent charity. "Staging Sir Tim Rice and Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber's epic rock opera in our 200-seat theatre and gardens is a huge undertaking," she commented, expressing joy at the audience turnout for this "fantastic, immersive experience."
The 18-strong company includes six recently graduated musical theatre students, whose participation has been made possible by Greenham Trust funding. These emerging talents will lead free workshops, cast Q&As, and offer behind-the-scenes insights for local young people, fostering engagement with arts careers. Subsidised £15 tickets are also available for ages 16-30 through the Watermill’s "16-30: Beginners" scheme.
Tickets for Jesus Christ Superstar are available to book online at watermill.org.uk or via the Box Office on 01635 46044.
