Get ready Wildcats! Hope Mill Theatre and The Lowry have announced they're joining forces to produce the first UK non-replica production of Disney’s smash-hit High School Musical. Marking 20 years since the iconic film's release, this fresh take on the beloved musical will open at The Lowry in Salford on August 21, 2026, for a limited run until September 13, 2026. General tickets go on sale July 18, 2025.
The production, based on David Simpatico's book with music adapted, arranged, and produced by Bryan Louiselle, will be co-directed by Hope Mill founders Joseph Houston and William Whelton. Further creative team members and casting details are set to be unveiled soon.
The Lowry's Lyric Theatre will undergo a complete transformation, becoming an immersive basketball court complete with on-stage seating and an extended stage. This design aims to fully immerse audiences in the world of East High. Fans can look forward to hearing all the classic songs, including "Breaking Free," "We’re All In This Together," "Get’cha Head in the Game," and "Stick to the Status Quo."
"High School Musical is a show that is loved and adored across generations," commented co-directors Joseph Houston and William Whelton. "It was our ambition to create a brand-new stage production… in a completely fresh and unique way." Matthew Eames, Co-Head of Theatres at The Lowry, added, "It’s a truly iconic show that launched the careers of some huge stars. We can’t wait for the East High Wildcats to come to Salford!"
High School Musical has enjoyed global success since its stage debut in 2006, including a London premiere in 2008.
