Following a triumphant, sold-out inaugural run, Carlos Acosta’s critically acclaimed production of Nutcracker in Havana is set to embark on its second UK tour, promising a vibrant Cuban twist on the festive classic. This unique co-production between Norwich Theatre and Valid Productions, choreographed and directed by the legendary Carlos Acosta CBE, will open on October 31, 2025, at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, concluding its run at its original home, Norwich Theatre Royal, on February 11, 2026.
Nutcracker in Havana captivated audiences and critics alike during its November 2024 premiere, fusing the beloved ballet with the exuberant spirit of Cuba. The traditional Tchaikovsky score has been brilliantly re-arranged by Cuban composer Pepe Gavilondo, providing a fresh and exhilarating soundtrack. With over 20 dancers from Acosta’s own Acosta Danza company, the production seamlessly blends classical ballet with Cuban dance traditions, bringing a distinctive flair to the iconic story.
Visually, the show is a spectacle, thanks to Nina Dunn's stunning video projection and set design, which famously brings snow to Havana in a "visually stunning spectacular treat." Costume design by Angelo Alberto and lighting by Andrew Exeter further enhance this vibrant reimagining.
Carlos Acosta expressed immense pride in the production's success, noting, "Watching them fuse together their classical and contemporary dance genres and Cuban Folk, with their sheer joy of dance, to the delight of audiences up and down the country has been a real dream come true for me."
Stephen Crocker, Chief Executive and Creative Director of Norwich Theatre, highlighted the production's groundbreaking impact, stating that 39% of the inaugural tour's audience were first-time dance attendees. "Daring to be different saw the inaugural tour a huge success, playing to sell-out audiences around the country... Validated by both audiences and critics alike, Nutcracker in Havana underscores the power of being brave and embracing innovation."
Casting for the upcoming tour will be announced soon. This second tour offers even more audiences across the UK the chance to experience Acosta Danza's unique take on a Christmas favourite.
