What is Immersive Theatre?
Immersive Theatre is so-named because audiences enter a world in which they are just that - immersed. Rather than being confined to a single viewpoint or seat, they are given the agency to freely explore an expansive and intricately designed set, which spans multiple rooms (and often multiple floors), encouraged to discover their own version of the story and environment.
In a free-roam show, audience members can choose which character(s) to follow, each of which, though overlapping with other characters, has their own unique journey through the tale. The result is that every visit to the performance is different and personal, as viewers explore different journeys and perspectives on events.
Immersive Theatre features an emphasis on world-building that exists in no other art form, and through this, an experience like no other is accessed.
What is Bacchanalia?
Bacchanalia is a free-roam immersive adaptation of The Bacchae, by Ancient Greek tragedian, Euripides. The story takes place in the city of Thebes, which steadily descends into madness and hedonism following the arrival of Dionysis, the god of wine and pleasure.
The performance itself will take place across four storeys, across myriad unique rooms and passages, each of which is meticulously designed to provide different parts of the city.
The array of characters that audiences can follow is broad, ranging from the maddening god himself and his followers, through to Thebes’ mayor, Pentheus, who desperately tries to maintain order in the city.
The cast portraying the story’s central characters features household names in the world of immersive theatre, as well as compelling new entrants to the space. Together, they communicate a tale of madness and descent through high-caliber contemporary dance, dialogue, and many other media.
Audiences are certain to undergo an unforgettable experience in this critically-acclaimed performance…
