Ted Huffman (4.48 Psychosis, 2016) makes his Royal Opera Main Stage directing debut with a new production of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, opening on Tuesday 24 September 2024. Huffman’s flourishing career has seen him work with some of the leading European opera houses including Glyndebourne, Aldeburgh Festival, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Festival Aix-en-Provence, Opernhaus Zürich and Oper Frankfurt; he now brings his unique vision to Pushkin’s bittersweet tale that blurs the boundaries between memory, longing and desire.
The cast is comprised of a mixture of returning artists and those making their debuts with The Royal Opera, of which there are four. It is led by Gordon Bintner (Così fan tutte, 2022) who returns to sing in the title role and Kristina Mkhitaryan as Tatyana alongside Liparit Avetisyan (Rigoletto, 2021) as Lensky. Christophe Mortagne also returns to sing the role of Monsieur Triquet, Siphe Kwani as A Captain and Jamie Woollard as Zaretsky. Woollard is currently a Jette Parker Artist, The Royal Opera’s highly sought-after Programme for curious artists of exceptional talent who want to intensify their professional development and take their first steps on the international stage.
Those making their debuts are mezzo-soprano Avery Amereau as Olga, Dmitry Belosselskiy as Prince Gremin, Alison Kettlewell as Madame Larina and Rhonda Browne as Filipyevna. Henrik Nánasi conducts. Belosselskiy also sings the role of Rocco in The Royal Opera’s Fidelio 9-26 October.
The creative team includes Set Designer Hyemi Shin, Costume Designer Astrid Klein and Lighting Designer D.M. Wood.
