The Gunpowder Plot from Layered Reality, the UK’s leading immersive experience specialist, is a thrilling cloak and dagger adventure that brings to life the failed attempt by Roman Catholic plotters to blow up King James I and his Government during the state opening of Parliament on 5th November 1605.

The multi-million pound visitor attraction is permanently situated at Tower Vaults at the Tower of London, the imposing fortress where the conspirators were imprisoned and tortured before their eventual execution in Westminster.

Immersive time travel back to London on 5th November 1605
Layered Reality has worked closely with Historic Royal Palaces on the storytelling, so visitors can live out the failed gunpowder plot, led by infamous conspirator Guy Fawkes, with as much detail and accuracy as possible.

To help recreate a feeling that audiences are at the centre of The Gunpowder Plot, Layered Reality™ uses a mix of live actors, movie quality sets, virtual reality (VR), and multi-sensory effects to create a truly immersive experience.

The 1 hour 40 minute experience starts in a cell in the Tower of London where live actors perform the story and lead guests through 24 interactive scenes. Highlights include a dangerous attempt to escape the Tower, cracking codes and working undercover as a spy for the Crown.

Actor Tom Felton as infamous conspirator Guy Fawkes
Guests also travel through London in 1605 in a series of virtual reality experiences which are seamlessly interwoven with live action and detailed movie-scale sets . This includes the boat journey (via virtual reality and motion simulator) to transport 36 barrels of gunpowder up the Thames with Guy Fawkes who is portrayed by actor Tom Felton, who leads a digital cast of over 50 including Gary Beadle (ex Eastenders).

Guests then head to the fictional Duck and Drake pub (traditionally located on the Strand in 1605) where the conspirators planned the Gunpowder Plot. It is here where guests will decide whether to support the plotters or betray them to the Crown. Making this decision sets in motion the next phase of the story, which closes with the inevitable end that we all know from history: the capture of Guy Fawkes underneath the Houses of Parliament, his torture and eventual execution.

Firework displays and bonfires
The events that followed saw King James I go on to make it law that citizens celebrate his great escape from The Gunpowder Plot leading to the famous saying ‘Remember, Remember the 5th of November’. The perilous events of 1605 would then go on to inspire firework displays and bonfires throughout the country for over 400 years.

The team behind The Gunpowder Plot is led by Andrew McGuinness, who has a vision to help people make memories they’ll never forget. He wants people to remember their time in a Layered Reality experience as one of the highlights of their year.
