The New Year has barely begun and February lurks round the corner already – time can be a frightful thing. Thankfully though there’s enough time left to purchase tickets for three very special shows – all taking place at the grand King’s Theatre: MY FAIR LADY, THE MIKADO, and THE WEDDING SINGER.

What’s so special about these shows you may ask yourself, given the fact that these are musicals performed up and down the country at any given time. Well, what makes the three shows so special is that Scottish amateur groups will perform them and, judging from the showcase on display, audiences will be in for a treat!

After a passionate introduction by the charming Catherine Bromley, Head of Press and Communications for Edinburgh’s Capital Theatres, and with the highly entertaining Andy Johnston as compere, MY FAIR LADY, performed by Southern Lights – Edinburgh’s oldest and most accomplished theatre group formed in 1897 (www.southernlightopera.co.uk), was the first highlight of the evening. Judging from the preview performance, this ever-popular tale of an Edwardian Cockney flower girl’s transformation into the belle of London High Society should be as delightful as ever and the musical will run from 5th to 9th of March.

What would the annual Amateur Showcase be without EDGAS (that’s the Edinburgh Gilbert & Sullivan Society)? Formed in 1924 and with a rich history at the King’s, things wouldn’t be the same without EDGAS! Fans can look forward to a very promising performance of THE MIKADO, crammed with famous musical numbers such as ‘Three Little Maids from School’ and ‘Tit-Willow’. The show will run from 12th to 16th of March. For further info please visit www.edgas.org

The final showcase of the night provided us with a glimpse of THE WEDDING SINGER, the forthcoming smash hit musical based on the 1998 movie starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. The highly respected Bohemian Lyric Opera Company (www.bohemians.org.uk) will no doubt deliver a dynamic spectacle revolving around New Jersey’s fave wedding singer Robbie Hart. Judging from the preview, even Alexis Arquette’s drag queen-character ‘George’ will be part of the cast and the young lad performing him did a great job. THE WEDDING SINGER will run from the 20th to 23rd of March.
