Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez returns to The Royal Opera in the title role of Massenet’s Werther, in the third revival of the Benoît Jacquot’s elegant 2004 production. Based on Goethe’s Romantic masterpiece Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (The Sorrows of Young Werther), the opera distils and intensifies the author’s depiction of two passionate people who inadvertently cause each other pain, exploring the conflict between duty and our most passionate desires. Alongside Massenet’s earlier opera Manon, Werther has proved to be one of the composer’s most enduringly popular works.

British conductor Edward Gardner returns to conduct all performances of Werther, following his critically acclaimed Royal Opera debut in the 2018/19 Season conducting Kát'a Kabanová. Juan Diego Flórez leads the cast in the title role, a Royal Opera role debut for him, appearing opposite American mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard who makes her Royal Opera debut as Charlotte. South African baritone and former Jette Parker Young Artist Jacques Imbrailo returns to the Company as Albert, alongside American soprano Heather Engebretson as Sophie, English bass Alastair Miles as The Bailli and French tenor Vincent Ordonneau as Schmidt. Three Jette Parker Young Artists appear in the production: Scottish-Iranian bass-baritone Michael Mofidian as Johann, British mezzo-soprano Stephanie Wake-Edwards as Käthchen and South Korean bass-baritone ByeongMin Gil as Bruhlmann.

Werther opens on 17 September 2019, with subsequent performances on 20, 24, and 27 September, and 1 and 5 October 2019.
