The Royal Opera presents the first revival of Jan Philipp Gloger’s witty and theatrical production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte. Nominated for ‘Best New Opera Production’ at the 2017 Laurence Olivier Awards, Jan Philipp Gloger’s staging locates Mozart’s opera in a working theatre, where the central characters are taken on a role-playing journey to explore the true meaning of love.

Così fan tutte was Mozart's final collaboration with the Italian librettist Lorenzo da Ponte – following Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni – and explores what happens when Ferrando and Guglielmo decide to respond to the philosopher Don Alfonso’s challenge and test the fidelity of their fiancées Fiordiligi and Dorabella. The consequences of their actions surprise everyone, not least the two men.

Internationally renowned British baritone Thomas Allen returns to the Royal Opera House, close to 50 years after his 1971 Covent Garden debut, to perform the role of Don Alfonso, for which he is celebrated worldwide. He is joined by Italian tenor Paolo Fanale as Ferrando, Hungarian-Romanian baritone Gyula Orendt as Guglielmo, Italian mezzo-soprano Serena Malfi as Dorabella, Georgian soprano Salome Jicia as Fiordiligi and Italian soprano Serena Gamberoni as Despina. Italian conductor and violinist Stefano Montanari makes his Royal Opera debut conducting all performances and also playing continuo.

Così fan tutte opens at the Royal Opera House on 25 February 2019, with subsequent performances on 28 February and 4, 9, 13 and 16 March 2019.
