Today, Grammy®, Tony® and Emmy® Award-nominated singer, songwriter, actress, and author, Sara Bareilles returns with her brand new single “Armor.” It is the first song off her fifth full-length album and first since 2013—due out next year via Epic Records.

“Armor” is available on all streaming platforms.

Waitress, the Tony Award-nominated smash hit Broadway musical for which Sara Bareilles wrote the music and lyrics, will have its UK premiere on 8 February ahead of an official opening night on 7 March at London’s Adelphi Theatre. Currently playing its third year on Broadway, Waitress will bring with it an all-female lead creative team – a West End musical first. Tickets are on sale now below.

For “Armor” and the entire record, Sara teamed up with legendary Academy® Award-winning producer T Bone Burnett. With its hummable bass line and topical musings “Armor” sees Sara deliver her most poignant, passionate, and powerful statement yet.

“This song was not intended to be released until next year, but it felt increasingly like it wants to belong to this moment in time,” said Sara. “Sometimes the world inspires a song... and sometimes the world also inspires the release date. So here we are. I spent the summer of 2018 working with T Bone Burnett on material that is incredibly near and dear to my heart, “Armor” serving as the centrepiece. It has been one of the great artistic adventures of my life. I am incredibly proud to share the first taste of it all.”

Speaking to those themes, the lyric video features real women holding up lines from the song and evoking a spirit of sisterhood and offering empowerment.

Waitress opened on 24 April 2016 at Broadway’s Brooks Atkinson Theater. Based on the 2007 motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly, Waitress was the first Broadway musical in history to have four women in the four top creative team spots, with a book by Jessie Nelson, a score by six-time Grammy Award-nominated singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, choreography by Lorin Latarro and direction by Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus. The production is currently touring the US and has also recently announced it will have its Australian premiere in 2020 at the Sydney Lyric Theatre.

Waitress tells the story of Jenna, an expert pie maker in a small town, who dreams of a way out of her loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s new doctor may offer her a chance at a new life, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes to happiness. But Jenna must find the courage and strength within herself to rebuild her life. This American musical celebrates friendship, motherhood, and the magic of a well-made pie.

On its Broadway opening, Waitress was nominated for four Outer Critics’ Circle Awards, including Outstanding New Broadway Musical; two Drama League Award Nominations, including Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Musical; six Drama Desk Nominations, including Outstanding Musical; and four Tony Award Nominations, including Best Musical.

Waitress is produced by Barry and Fran Weissler and Norton and Elayne Herrick.
